“Texas Sales and Use Tax Fundamentals – Key Do’s, Don’ts and Best Practices”
This session will provide a broad overview of and update on key Texas sales and use tax concepts and guidelines as they relate to EPC/general contracting and specialty subcontracting for commercial projects performed in Texas. Specifically, the session will cover sales tax treatment by type of work type/scope, contract form/structure requirements, resale and exemption documentation as well as a discussion of specific project and customer types (e.g., manufacturing owners/buyers, exempt entities, etc.). The technical presentation will cover approximately 35-40 minutes, followed by Q&A and group discussion addressing specific questions and issues shared by audience members (as applicable).

Michael (Mike) Cantrell, CMI, is a Director in the State and Local Tax practice of Baker Tilly, based in the firm’s Frisco, Texas office. Mike has over 32 years of comprehensive experience dealing with all aspects of multistate sales and use tax consulting and technical delivery to both public and private businesses operating in Texas and throughout the US. Mike’s technical expertise and focus includes sales and use tax audit defense/management, tax overpayment recovery, transaction analysis and planning, buy and sell-side due diligence, post-merger integrations, ASC 450-20 (FAS-5) reserve analysis and sales and use tax compliance best practices. His concentrated industry experience includes construction, manufacturing and distribution and energy (upstream, midstream, OFS and alternative energy).
Linda Icenhower is a Manager specializing in sales and use tax at Baker Tilly. Over the last 20 years, she has focused heavily on assisting clients with complex sales and use tax audit matters, particularly in Texas. Linda is also heavily focused on consulting with her clients on various sales and use tax consulting issues, including tax guidance, compliance support and specific industry best practices. Linda’s industry focus includes construction, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and government contracting across a variety of jurisdictions.
